Local Artists – Kenya

Out of sheer curiosity: I did a search of List of Kenyan Muscians on google, the 1st option that comes is the wikipedia (of course), and the following are the ones listed: Fundi Konde, David Kabaka, Eric Wainaina,Daniel Owino Misiani,Suzzana Owiyo,Tony Nyadundo, David Mathenge a.k.a Nameless, Ken Ring, Fadhili William >> Some of whom I havn’t really listened to their songs.

Then I think to myself, ok, I expected more the local artists so I go ahead and search name by name (its curiosity not idleness) , The likes of SautiSol,Wahu,Redsun, Amani, Jua Kali, Collo, Kaz, Atemi, Abass, Mad Traxx there so many (list is endless) some of whom I don’t even know their names.

This really gets me thinking, considering that am not an avid radio listener (due to lack of time) and as a result don’t hear most of the local music. Good thing I haven’t yet bought a car(coming soon), so I use public transport and they generously play Kenyan Music videos sold to them by the local dj’s (called Dj Mixes).

A few things I have noticed is that Kenyan Musicians/Local Artistes.

Number one: They can be quite poor entertainers, here are my reasons for thinking that way:

Some music videos suck big time, they never go out of (read ‘some’), they are low budget, unclear, boring, disorganized, like you watch them and you just want to laugh you’re heart because of how hilarious the artists look (you can imagine am in the matatu watching such a video and am really trying to hold my laughter in). The only ones I can say I have totally enjoyed and gone gigigaga are videos for : Wahu, Nameless, Redsun, Amani, Sauti sol.

They never go out of their comfort zones to do something better. It’s always the same old, their songs are like the national anthem…its like they are all fighting to sound the same. Same crowd, same venues (such that you can see two videos having the same cars or grounds)… its like they just run out of ideas and do what has been done before.
They are not adventurous in exploring the music world : Instruments, different beats, different content — How many of the musioans do you know that play an instrument to spice up their songs…?? eeerrr one or two, at least for those who are known by the masses, Eric Wainaina and Harry Kimani…am tryng to think of others :: Not ringing a bell.

They concentrate too much on the party scene and forget there are others parts of life Kenyans are dying to hear of … and that’s Why I think Nigerian, Tanzanian, Ugandan Music is flourishing … Although I can give props to Sauti Sol, Atemi, Linda Muthama(TPF1), STL and many others that I probably haven’t mentioned, maybe because of my ignorance or they haven’t mingled with the public.

They think they have made it Big already (which is a good thought if you put it into action) … the fact that I havn’t/never been convinced to buy you’re latest album to me already makes that thought NOT a reality.

Number two : Their Marketing strategies … To be honest I think the channels they use to get through people are obsolete (read 1900). They have to up their game in this day and age. You can’t just use word of mouth and expect people to know about your songs. Nowadays you have to launch your albums, have concerts, package your products well.

Now that I have mentioned Packaging of the product … this I mean by the content, the originality of the music, the outward appearance – I should feel that the Sh.900 – Sh. 1500 am spending on the CD is for one that I can listen to as many times because the songs in it are interesting and also be proud to have bought it.

Some album launches I have heard of:

Redsan launched his album – “Versatility’ released under Dutty Sounds Records.
Jua Kali “Ngeli Ya Genge” – am not a genge fun but I think he penetrated the market (international) okay…he tried.
Juliani – “Mtaa Mentality” — At least I got to hear of it since it was announced in church a couple of times.

Those are the few I have at least heard of … considering I don’t mingle among local artists so I don’t know who’s released what. So I wonder am Kenyan and I barely know 1/4 of the Local Artists here, so what about a foreign person who doesn’t even know wgere to satrt looking, let alone the names… there’s something they’re doing wrong… The only time I get to hear of them is when there are scandals and they are in the newspapers or something similar to that.

Number three: Why is it that I know more of the International artists? This time I won’t blame it on my ignorance. I conclude that they’re not using the right channels to disseminate information about themselves, in this day and age thank God for technology, USE it…I believe its one of the cheapest means :) They should have biographies/ websites / blogs something that SCREAMS OUT what you’ve got and why I should listen to your music. What your music is about, your achievements and so on. We would like to know the people whose songs we listen to you know!

Big Up to websites that are on point, and has content that helps me know more about the Kenyan entertainment industry: – Blackstar Entertainment (This website I must say, is AMAZING, check it out!!, and what they do as well is Quality…seen them do it and they never disappoint.)

Those are the few (lol 2) that I have seen and know of, it would be nice if people told me of more… Then maybe I would have something better to say.. Either way am still proud of my people :) . I was just being real on my thought…and its just a blog so nothing serious ;) but with that maybe some Local Artists can try #StyleUp a bit

Otherwise all said and done, I would also appreciate the Local Actors – Now those I give them a #ThumbsUp because they can keep me glued to the T.V , I can proudly say that Kenyan actors are nowadays sooo on point. If only I had a way of directly appreciating I would…just that am not the kind to ask for an autograph or scream when I see you across the road..but am proud.

Just sitting in the office working, and I think < clearly my mind wasn’t at work..hehe BUSTED > whats that thing you do that you know it’s really irritating but you can’t help do it because that’s just you. so its more like IRRITATING {YOU}

Thought this would be interesting, when you get to identify what it is that you think irritates people about you, without them even telling you <ok, that was a bit twisted>

Mine :

1. Repeating Songs

I can repeat a song I like for a whole day, and until I get bored no-one’s telling me anything. Thank God people don’t share computers…lol

2. Asking too many questions

Super Inquisitive, I don’t take half stories, I want to know everything. So if you make a mistake and decide to tell me a juicy story — have all the information.. quite not interesting esp when you also green like I am…lol

3. Interrupting discussions that am not part of

Haha am a pro at joining conversations even when I don’t know what’s going So who did that?? WIDE EVIL GRIN :()

4. Being Over-Defensive

I know I have done something wrong, but I have been in the act of self defence…nah, I didn’t do that even when it’s in black n white I did…or have an excuse for .. My mum is always the Victim here.. Sorry :)

5. Thinking about Everything

“Let me get back to you” …. And I was just asked to go for coffee, not like am being asked to travel to space…ha!

Would like to hear some of yours, you can tag whoever you want:

Pure Love

What is pure love???

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. ” 1st Corinthians 13:4-7

Am not trying to be religious or anything, but that to me signifies Pure love by all means. I expect that if someone says they love me, they will do the above, otherwise you just don’t, there’s no two ways about it. I don’t even think there’s anything really complicated about Love, it’s just what it is, it’s the people who are complicated and as a result blame it on love.

Just to make it clear, the love am talking about is in general, like love between friends, between siblings, between couples between parents and children and so on. God’s love for us is pure love, for sure, God shows and clearly proves His(own) love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. So I wonder, for us humans if its possible for us to actually love, like truly and purely love.

Like the song, Last Flight Out – Plus One, this song talks about a guy who loves a girl so much that he’s willing to take the red-eye flight for her, no matter what his personal cost. The lyrics reveal a vulnerable side:

Last Flight Out – Plus One

I’m so scared that you will see
All the weakness inside of me
I’m so scared of letting go
That the pain I’ve hid will show

I know you want to hear me speak
But I’m afraid that if I start to
I’ll never stop

[c h o r u s]
I want you to know
You belong in my life
I love the hope
I see in your eyes
For you I would fly
At least I would try
For you I’ll take
The last flight out

I’m afraid that
You will leave
As my secrets
Have been revealed
In my dreams
You’ll always stay
Every breathing moment from now

I know you want to hear me speak
But I’m afraid that if I start to
I’ll never stop

[c h o r u s]

I cannot hold back
The truth no more
I let you wait too long
Although it’s hard and scares me so
A life without you scares me more

Ever thought of those people you would take the last flight out for, and who would reciprocate? Who is it that purely loves you and who do u love back in the same way? #Questions to ponder?

Live, Love, Laugh … Life is short, Live it to the maximum.

Between Me n You

So I was thinking… nearly everyone or most people have that person they ran to when they have issues… BFF’s, Girl Friends, Boy Friends, Best Friends…ok, that person.

I hate it when guys are in a relationship and they are having issues and the whole world knows about just because one party couldn’t contain the information and try sort it out with the patner.. that really sucks.

Well Brandy here…lol, just said what I would say in a better more composed way than I would have. Like let all the things we are having be between me and you, you just dont tell everyone. Take it as some piece of advice, the person ur dating should be the person you ran to as much as they are the ones you want to ran away from. Those other people mainly interfere instead of helping.

Between Me n You – Brandy…..
Just tell em’ to mind their buisness
Can you stop,

stop talking to your two friends about us
They don’t know about us
They don’t know what’s going on
Stop, stop calling them after we argue
you, you’re not thinking are you
this can go no way but wrong

and I, I won’t try to make this right with you
If I’m, the bad guy
every time we fight they’re in your ear
with the drama
Quick to tell you Imma do you wrong
Baby they need to get gone
And you need to

Let our business be
Between you and me
Don’t tell nobody
They don’t need to know how we do
If you’re mad at me
Just be mad at me
But let our business be (?) me and you
Between me and you

It’s our problem
should not be conversation
For your lonely homegirls
All they doing is hating
They don’t wanna see you
happy and all in love
They wanna break us up
So they can be the one

and I, I won’t try to make this right with you
If I’m, the bad guy
every time we fight they’re in your ear
with the drama
Quick to tell you I’m gon do you wrong
Baby they need to get gone
And you need to

Let our business be
Between you and me
Don’t tell nobody
They don’t need to know how we do
If you’re mad at me
Just be mad at me
But let our business be (?) me and you
Between me and you

And it won’t get any better
If we keep including people who
Don’t want us together
Boy it’s you and me

Leave everybody on the other side, we’ll be alright

1st FEBRUARY 1987 – Happy Birthday!!!!

A year older, a year wiser, a year of awesomeness, a year of being Kawiria. And all I can do is thank the Almighty Lord for the blessing of life and life in abundance.

Oh well having being born on 1st Feb 1987 … today I turn 23. Am happy for myself, 23 looked so far when I was 16 and its here already. Then I begin the month of love… which is what I try to preach… I love loving and I love being loved.

So I would want to say thank you to all those that love me and to all those that I love, for them opening up their hearts and being accommodative. I totally appreciate.

So being a monday, i normally don’t like or enjoy monday’s— monday blues, its the day after the weekend, its the day i have to wake up early after two days of sleeping alot, i have to make plans for the week… its just the full boring day of the week for me. But for this year, am gonna try my best to enjoy mondays regardless. I’ll be positive about it starting today. Because am thinking my birthday falling on a monday—not so cool but now am thinking ‘HOW COOL’

Today I don’t think I will cut a cake or have a party but i will ensure the day is enjoyed…hehe I don’t know how…al just go with the flow. But enjoy every moment, even as I seat on the office chair and stare at a computer screen infort of me…lol

So my past year, was spent quite well, quite a couple of accomplishments which i thank Almighty God, my family and friends for. Everyone played a role one way or another. Stuff that I realized i that I was probably in doubt about, that:

  1. Family and friends are important aspect in your life – I may have lost touch with some but in my heart they always hold a special place. The ones i am always with or we communicate more often than not, I am grateful for the fact that you are here. The ones i insist on … hehe, al keep on nagging :p
  2. I have a lovely smile – I will always try keep my smile on…thanks to all those that tell me I have a lovely smile :) Thats inspiring by the way.
  3. Am beautiful and intelligent as well… am not blowing my trumpet or anything, its those things that i realized through people and school and am trying to internalize.
  4. Am a good person – well, i think i am,but i don’t really know what people exactly mean when they say that.
  5. Am a party pooper – Sometimes that is, i shan’t explain further.
  6. I am stylish – hehe I try,but thanks for letting me know.
  7. There are greater things for me:- It feels great to have people that look out for the best for you. Honestly, for all the help, ideas and nagging I get from my people they are great inspirations.
  8. I subconsciously love school and pressure but I say i hate them…weird huh!
  9. I can write something and someone actually reads it… if you’ve reached this part then I can say am a blogger :)

Music wise : Taylor Swift and Alicia Keys were my artists for the year. The ‘Fearless’ album did it for me, I can repeat songs the whole day as long as i enjoy it and find meaning in it.

At 23, i believe this is going to be a great year…am going to be all out and embrace every moment, am going to be successful and be a positive influence to people.

My inspiration for this new year:

“Life is full of wonderful and terrific opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. I won’t stop dreaming. I won’t stop seeking God for His divine appointments. I will live life with moments that take my breath away. I won’t live my life “on hold.” “

So let me brace myself … am actually feeling a bit different, abit grown up and added spank…lol now that i come to think of it. But i guess it’s all in my head, which is a good thing.

Have a beautiful February on my tab … as in its my prayer that this month be the best and this year as well. My pastor says it’s “The year of the LORD’S Significance” in your life and I believe so. May that be your believe for this year as well.

My starting song of the year:

Alicia Keys – Wait Till You See My Smile

Much Love to all.

For all the other February babies….. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ;-)

God bless!!!
