Who’s Your Cheerleader?

Life is fragile. It could be like this one day and the next day it flips a coin and becomes something else. Like when a hobo hits the jack pot or Richie rich is declared bankrupt or you sleep well and wake up with a bad ass flu or slip and break a bone or two. What keeps everything together is you. Basically, its all about you, it always is. All the things you do, deep within it’s for your fulfillment. It’s all about what you feel, what you think and what you want (and not necessarily need, because you’ll somehow make sure get what you really need or a way to get around it).

When an egg breaks by an outside force, a life ends.
When an egg breaks by an inside force, a life begins.
Similarly, great things always begin from within!

cheerleader, cheer up,

It takes a little more to make a champion of course, but it takes a lot more to make a cheerleader. It’s not everyday that you’ll find yourself cheering yourself on. In all honesty, there are some situations that it takes more than other people to come to your aid. Such that even if the external force like in the case of the egg comes to your rescue they could crack you up (not in the “haha funny” kind of way, but in the “get out of my life” kind of way) and leave you more messed up than you actually were.

But if it’s something that comes from within, you are able to think it, analyse it and apply it. It could be a slow process, but the fact that it’s stemming out from you makes the difference. No one can internalize something for you, no one can give you the “you can do it” or “it’s going to be okay” mentality more than you can do yourself. In not so many words, you are supposed to be your own cheer leader.

Your life is the only place you’re both the player in the play-field and the cheerleader on the sidelines. It’s the cheerleaders who give the players the psyche for the game, they are sometimes even the ones who bring some spirit to the game.

The next time you think you don’t have cheerleaders in your life or someone asks you “who’s your cheerleader”? (woe unto you if you almost thought it’s who’s your daddy). Most of us are blessed to have families, partners and friends as your top cheerleaders, but no one beats you being your own. Because when other people don’t have hope in you at one point or another, you can have hope in yourself and that’s what makes you take the next leap on to greater things. Plus what are the chances of disappointing yourself, unless you don’t really like yourself. You should go out of your way to be there for yourself.

So if you’re going through something, I know it’s easier to say than do and I’m probably not in your shoes because am not you and you’re not in mine either, but you’re your best cheerleader. You’re the one who’ll cheer yourself while you’re in the play-field hustling and trying to make ends meet. Others will play with you, cheer with you but the MVP at the end of the day should be you. Not your friends, not your family, not your partner. They are your support system, your team and they’ll definitely help you defend and attack … Yikes! Did I just go the football way, the influence meeh! But you get what I mean. yes?

Upcoming Event: ZIADA Nairobi

I don’t mean to brag, but the one of the female vocalists (Rosie) for Adawnage Band happens to be my desk-mate at work. Yes, I know, I know direct access, you can pass all the messages, like how you’re a big fan and I’ll make sure they reach. Yes, I get the chance to ask her to do for me the start part for Uwezo…uwezo, yes, she can randomly pull those notes comfortably without the, “listen to the words and not the voice” excuses. Now if only that ability to sing could just rub off on me. You know what I mean, I would definitely do a vlog. But it’s not yet happened so I remain a cheerleader.

ZIADA

A Swahili word meaning to ‘increase or have in abundance’, is a series of revolutionary musical events organized by award-winning Christian musicians, Adawnage and Zidi The Band. While Adawnage and Zidi the Band exist separately as fully-ledged units with outstanding female & male vocalists, instrumentalists and support teams, their paths often intertwine. With similar objectives and vision, they have come together to form ZIADA (a compressed version of the bands’ names) to achieve much more impact together.

ZIADA is committed to changing lives and perceptions. Literally. They’ve lined up brilliant works of photography on the beauty of our country captured by talented, professional and widely celebrated photographers. The photo exhibition will precede the musical event. This event is dubbed to create  a relevant and socially conscious music experience that connects impresses upon the 25-year-old adult to play their part in promoting peace in their circles.

Are you rooting for peace in our country but you lack a channel through which to promote it? This will be a good one, through photography, music, poetry, spoken word, writing among others. Spread the word and mark your calendars!

Well oh well…

I vouch for peace, always will.

I love the Kenya where I walk or drive freely without fear.

Where I sleep knowing that my family and friends are safe,

Day or night.

Where there is no discrimination,

Tribal or gender related.

To see and embrace the beauty that it holds.

I believe you also do.

Peace is possible.

Not bad huh! Maybe I could try a little poetry *joke*, just felt a little convicted. However, I also think “when the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace”. With that in mind, have a beautiful week ahead and be blessed.

Friday Quickie

I had a “I doubt it’s Friday” moment while heading to work today morning. You know where you question your conscience, like “what if today is not Friday O_O, I’m in jeans and I am already excited it’s T.G.I.F. Snap, it could be Thursday and I got the days wrong”. It was serious to an extent I postponed updating my status in one of the  sites saying “Thank God tomorrow is Saturday” lest it’s not. I know, you’re probably thinking am going to the other side, the nutsy side that is. But really, has that ever happened to you?

TGIF, Friday

I think it’s because I was feeling happy despite the muddy terrain on my way to work which on a normal day would get me all cursy and mad at the weather man. I mean can’t he just wait for the road construction next to my house to complete, then make it rain. If you have passed by Yaya Center, you definitely know the road am talking about. It’s been dug out and the soil there is clay soil, they have been on it for a while. So when it rains, it gets all sticky and almost impassable, it’s my short cut and seeing as am not willing to wake up a few minutes earlier to use the long way…I have to live with it.

Otherwise, what’s good, what’s not?

  • My baby sister (feels awkward calling her the baby, but she’ll always be. She’s taller, bigger, a bully and very demanding, but I love her all the same…lol). She’s finished her O’ Levels. Congratulation young girl. Now we can hang out much much more. Ps: But it’ll be awkward if you introduce me to your boyfriend if you have one at the moment, not sure I can handle that thought yet.
  • Boyfriend came back from the short travel. Somebody say goodies. I got yummy goodies, maybe the source of all the Friday excitement. I can assure you today it’s on a different level.
  • Work is fine. I was assigned a work mentor. I know right. I think I actually needed someone to share to my developments other than my folks and the bf. Maybe to guide me, we young ones can get lost in translation or in trying to understand what’s going on around us or within us, especially at work and other things related or unrelated. Let’s see how this one goes, since am not the sharing type. She could be the break through.
  • School, exams are coming up, bleurgh! But thesis proposal defense was postponed to January 2013 *whoop whoop*. Okay, that’s not a good thing because that means my December will be kind of screwed up. Imagine me reading instead of watching flicks with others or not lazing around, that’s our Christmas culture. That gives me the motivation to work on it now more than ever.
  • Parents, are super-duper. I always ask God to bless them with their heart desires. I have never seen people so selfless like my parents, they definitely deserve all that and more.
  • Friends, I try to keep up. I try to check up on you as much as I can knowingly or unknowingly (thank God for platforms like twitter, Facebook, blogs, LinkedIn and whatsapp). I know am not the best there is, but I believe I’m sufficient no? But so that you know, I’m the kind that you catch up where we left off. So if you haven’t checked up on me, yes you can.
  • Of days, the year is coming to an end. Can you believe it’s like 5 weeks to NEW YEAR? LOL, looking back at my beginning of the years’ post and it just feels like yesterday but with some changes midway.
  • Readers, how you find this one here interesting is beyond amazing. You’re presence keeps me and my humble *blog* abode going. I hope to always share things that’ll impact your life positively or just make you feel like your reading what you needed read. (Ever had a moment where someone talks to you and tells you something that you needed to hear but no one was saying it? Yes?, then you get me here).

Since we’re also in the Thanks Giving spirit. If you’re alive, healthy, have at least one reason to smile (notice I didn’t ask you for 100, just 1), a place to call home at the end of the day, family and/or friends (it could be even 1, you’d be surprised that the people who are actually your real friends are just a handful), something you’re passionate about, access to good music. Then dude, you have every reason to say thank you to God and your people for making all these things possible for you.

Inspiration for the day,

Today, Friday, TGIF, Thanksgiving, Positive

Have a super-duper weekend and in the Thanks Giving spirit, staff a kuku (chicken), Turkey is not so Kenyan, eat, drink and make merry. Basically live, laugh and love more, because I know you already do.

Choose Your Battles

“Choose your battles wisely. After all, life isn’t measured by how many times you stood up to fight. It’s not winning battles that makes you happy, but it’s how many times you turned away and chose to look into a better direction. Life is too short to spend it on warring. Fight only the most, most, most important ones, let the rest go.” ~ C. JoyBell C.

Battle, fights, arms, shield, enemies, truce

Many are the times we are faced with situations that leave us feeling like we’re in a battle field, you just don’t know what the next move will be. It’s either you’re firing away or you’re the one holding the shield to protect yourself. Then again we’re left with the choice to decide whether we are going to make it a battle field or we’ll just retreat, call it truce and move unto other important things. Well, in writing it sounds pretty easy and fancy but in reality, it’s one of the most difficult things to do. This you letting down your guard and hoping to solve whatever it is amicably with a person who has probably gotten you to your last *not so amused* nerve.

We are all human, we are all bound to make mistakes here and there even when we mean good, sometimes so innocently that it surprises you that it actually made someone pretty pissed ha-ha guess who’s a culprit, ask the mister. Consciously or subconsciously, we get on to someones nerves. This happens almost every other day, so imagine if every-time this happened, we chose to get into the battle field, fight for our rights and see who comes out winner. There are also those times that you even know you’re the source of the battle, that if you just came forth, apologized and straightened things out, things will be at ease.

Basically, it’s not everything that gets to your nerve should be worth a fight. Fights should be chosen wisely. Know when to come out armed, when to fire out, when to hold your fire or shield and so on. But also know when to retreat, because in every fight, there are winners, losers and/or eventually enemies.

So really, if it’s your partner, your parents or even your siblings and you’re having a fight, be sure to know when to retreat, when to raise the white flag saying, “let’s sort this out.” Because where there’s a winner and a loser assuming the battle has to eventually come to an end (maybe with the help of internal or external forces), in which case an enemy lingers. Ever been to paint-ball? Best scenario, when you’re told to give up, just raise your hand…well, trying to picture it  in a fight, damn! Makes you feel like a woos, but it’s for the good trust me, things you do for love.

The best thing about these battles, sought or unsought, chosen or abandoned, is that once the dust has settled, you can talk about it and maybe laugh about it, if it was funny. After all what is it about winning battles anyway? So lets say you win a battle and then? If am the one on the losing end, I’ll feel wrecked and probably look for a way to get back at you, I mean who wants to carry the “L” sign on the forehead? I sure don’t want. So fights, are about compromising, coming to an agreement, calling it truce. Unless it’s beyond repair, then we can have the winner and loser! Read this one though, it’s a funny one.

Humor is the spiciest condiment in the feast of existence. Laugh at your mistakes but learn from them, joke over your troubles but gather strength from them, make a jest of your difficulties but overcome them.

In other non-related news,

Tangled, earphones, iPod, Apple, Music

How these things tangle O_O

How earphones get tangled while in your pocket or bag? I mean not that they have so much space, but the tangling that happens there baffles me. Maybe the pair doesn’t get along *bulb light* and since they don’t have much of a choice the best they can do is strangle each other, hence the tangling…lol. If only earphones were humans, this would make so much sense. Otherwise, it remains a ghostly mystery.

Ps: Happy Birthday to an amazing and special friend, Liz Njeri Karanja. A big Shout Out to you. May you have many more and be blessed because you more than deserve it. Much Love. To my readers, hope your Tuesday is as terrific as it’s supposed to be, mine is. I believe.

Friday Fives

Thank God It’s Friday! It’s one of those days that I’m craving for its beauty, but it keeps unleashing it’s not so beautiful side from every corner. Getting the knots in the tum tum but oh well, trying to see it sunny side up. Hope my senses coordinate…lol

1. Oopsies!

School, work and life. That’s just a combination that kicks you real hard in the butt everyday. Let me give you a preview of what goes on in my mind as am randomly walking or sitting. *Crap, I haven’t sent that mail, tested something and I was supposed to give some feedback…we have a presentation tomorrow and assignments are still pending, my thesis is so expectant, have I communicated to the necessary people*. End of day. As in it’s just whisked away before I know it. Sometimes I manage to do what I had thought out to do, then other times, time plays me.

Kitkat, chocolate, Nestle

white or dark?

Some KitKat could easily make you forget the long day you’ve had. Which one do you prefer by the way, white or dark? I’m still torn between the two. Because this one is not the bitter dark (dark chocolate is yuck) and it’s the one I’ve been used to for ages. The KitKat white was a first for me, wasn’t bad though.

2. Weekly Crackers

You’re allowed to judge me as you wish right about now. Yeah, I had ugali for breakfast today.

ugali, tomatoes, breakfast

Left over Ugali decorated with tomatoes to make it look a little more attractive :-)

End of joke. Sometimes I do these things to either amuse myself or see how people react. What’s wrong with carrying ugali for breakfast anyway? People eat cereal, bread, chapati and the likes. But ugali raises brows. Its raw materials are the same that make corn flakes, that’s my excuse and I stick to it…hehe.

3. Faves and Craves

Got the African Print (a.k.a Kitenge) attire made some time ago all courtesy of Vonette, remember? I now want more. Plus her work has proven to be awesome, even from the people I had referred *whoop whoop*.

kitenge, African print, Vonetta, African

How I save some clothes for certain occasions and then I end up never wearing them seeing as am not the type to grace so many occasions. Who else has this habit? It’s about time we dropped it! Wear as you please despite the occasion.

4. Stupendous Snippet

I have a colleague who doesn’t do social media or any of these social sites, actually any sites at all. And no, I don’t mean she started and saw the pros and cons then opted out. She just didn’t get on to the bandwagon. I found that pretty interesting, like wow. Then for a moment there, I thought how my life would be if I wasn’t on any social media site, if I didn’t have a blog, if I was like totally private. Which to some extent I think I am, but of course not downright completely. It’s nice to meet my complete opposite.

Oh, I snapped out of that thought, because this is me. I enjoy this, as long as it doesn’t consume me whole.

5. T.G.I.F Inspiration

Saw this quote in a presentation being done by one of my class mates and thought how cool. I bet it touches on how different people lead, some prefer to research on existing theories, then imitate. Others look at what’s going on, then give orders on what is to be done. Then the others, get into it and experience it themselves.

“There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” ~ Will Rogers

That’s what we should do in the different areas in our lives. You’re better off peeing on the fence and seeing what happens, than reading, or observing how others are doing their thing. It could be different for your case and in most cases it is. no?

To living, laughing and loving more each day. Have a tamu weekend.

Friday Fives

Thank God It’s Friday! My mood is just in-sync with the weather today, not so sunshiny.

Friday, Fives, Friday Fives, TGIF

1. Oopsies!

Time is moving so fast and catching up. You know end of semester with everything labelled assignments and projects due. Let’s just say it’s something like

I have entered crunch time to meet my deadlines. You know how us last minutes guys can be, so pressure is what I am made of right now.  Looks like this doesn’t go well with so many other things. That sunshine would do me some justice (sunshine here being symbolic). But the real sun could do a little something too, the rain doesn’t make things any better unless when asleep. It makes you want to sleep more (do I want that now, no).

2. Weekly Crackers

When you see someone staring at you and not in the face, be sure to look down and check if your fly is zipped up and not down. Had a moment during the week, where this guy approaches me as I was waiting for the mister and says maybe I can wait inside the restaurant but I’m like, “no I’m okay waiting here”. Then he goes like,”I’ve tried to signal you, but your fly is open” O_O bummm! I look down at the damage, it was not that bad, meaning someone couldn’t quite see through, but embarrassing all the same. So I just zip up and continue tweeting.

Ps: Someone should do a meme on this scenario, too hilarious.

Deep inside I was having a “HAHA, YOU JUST GOT CAUGHT ZIP DOWN” moment. Thank God, I wasn’t rude to him or respond with a miss diva answer when he approached me. Some people just come across to you to help out, not necessarily hit on you.

3. Faves and Craves

Can’t wait to be done with school already, I just can’t wait. I crave the end of it, when I can do it voluntarily, not because I need to. This going to class everyday is such a bore. I wish I was reading for fun and not for exams, cats or proposals. Funny that I said this during my Undergraduate and am saying the same for my Post graduate, maybe I will still be saying the same when doing my PhD and feeling all frustrated because of the amount of work. The relief after finishing though is indescribable, you feel like a genius, especially if you ace it, at least I do, for a moment there…LOL

4. Stupendous Snippet

Simplicity beats complexity any day! If you can’t explain it to a 6-year-old then you probably don’t understand it yourself said someone. Maybe I should just carry this thought as I do my proposal. Because honestly, I am at that point you ask yourself, “what exactly am I doing, how exactly am I going to do it, crap! I’m so stuck, this shiii is difficult”. I am halfway done but gosh! I need to understand it and bring it out in the most simple way. I also don’t want to be grilled during my defense because I haven’t brought out my “problem” clearly.

Suffering! I bet you get the picture of how screwed I am right? *rhetorical*

5. T.G.I.F Inspiration

strength, woman

Maybe some good music, clear mind and I will hack it, yah. Any one else going through something almost close to this, if not this. I could do with some consolation, you know how we humans do. Just kidding though. Don’t let these stuff get to you, it’s just education at the end of the day (if my dad read this after the pressure he gives me on our calls, he can smack me…lol), it shouldn’t make life so miserable.

To living, laughing and loving more each day.

Random Mumblings

If it were you…but it’s not, lucky you.

Would you go to school with this lousy weather?

I went to to school with that lousy weather.

Would you brave the rain just to attend the lecture?

The rain had ceased, so there was nothing to brave really…lol

Would you find it worth the try, the traffic, the wetness, the process of getting there?

It wasn’t that worth it, but the process was smooth, not as complicated that I’d thought it out to be.

Would you go to that class thinking you should have just gone home?

The traffic was a mess, plus it was muddy. So not really.

Would you enjoy the class?

Yesterdays lecturer can be a pain, but I enjoyed discussing politics and servant leadership in organisations and relating it to Kenya (we are so messed up it’s frightening.)

Would you regret choosing that option?

I didn’t regret it, at least it kept me busy and dry

That’s what running through my mind before and after class. I don’t really feel like going to school and the rain happens to be the perfect excuse right about now but it happened to stop. As I battle with my thoughts which are definitely biased towards going home, let’s see how this one goes. My conscience was killing me so I ended up in school. I’m one of those good girls most of the time…lol

Well, with life comes choices which we should firmly stand by once chosen. You own it. You own your choices, so it make sense to think through them. Trying to see if my answers to any of those questions makes enough sense to support the decision I make. You’ve seen what I did there? Not answering this question is too main stream. I saw what I did there, the answers to support going home didn’t add up, ended up feeling guilty and I needed to own my decision. School it was eventually (better late than never).

Hope your week is going well so far despite the almost predictable lousy weather. Dress warm and be fuzzy to deal. Have a tamu *sweet* Wednesday!

Mines more than awesome. Was on some “gourmet dinner (*something* turkey and rice with a glass of cold ribena) thanks to him who’s a supper chef. Yummers!
